The project is divided into several parts. Details for each deliverable can be found in this document. Refer to the course Syllabus for submission dates. § Project Part 1: Network Design § Project Part 2: Firewall Selection and Placement § Project Part 3: Remote Access and VPNs
In today’s interconnected world, network security is of paramount importance. With the increasing reliance on technology and the escalation of cyber threats, organizations need to ensure that their networks are well designed and protected. This project aims to address various aspects of network security, including network design, firewall selection and placement, and remote access and virtual private networks (VPNs).
Project Part 1: Network Design
The first part of the project focuses on network design. A well-designed network is essential for ensuring the reliability, availability, and security of an organization’s information systems. This involves considering factors such as the network topology, network segmentation, IP addressing, and network infrastructure.
The network topology determines how devices are interconnected and how data flows within the network. Different topologies, such as star, mesh, and bus, have different characteristics and pros and cons. The network designer needs to make an informed decision based on the organization’s requirements and constraints.
Network segmentation involves dividing the network into smaller subnetworks for improved security and performance. By separating different departments or units into their own virtual LANs (VLANs), the risk of unauthorized access or malware spreading throughout the network is reduced. The network designer needs to determine the appropriate segmentation strategy based on the organization’s needs.
IP addressing involves assigning unique IP addresses to devices within the network. This ensures that data can be delivered accurately and efficiently. The network designer needs to choose between using IPv4 or IPv6 addresses and plan the IP address scheme, considering factors such as scalability, security, and ease of management.
Network infrastructure includes the physical components that make up the network, such as routers, switches, and cables. The network designer needs to carefully consider the performance, reliability, and security features of these components in order to create a robust network infrastructure.
Project Part 2: Firewall Selection and Placement
The second part of the project focuses on firewall selection and placement. Firewalls act as a barrier between an organization’s internal network and external networks, such as the internet, by inspecting and controlling network traffic.
Selecting the right firewall for an organization involves considering several factors, such as the desired level of security, scalability, and the organization’s budget. There are different types of firewalls, including packet filtering firewalls, application-level gateways, and stateful inspection firewalls, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
The placement of firewalls within the network is also crucial. Firewalls can be placed at various points, such as at the network perimeter, between internal networks, or even on individual hosts. The placement strategy should be based on the organization’s security requirements, network architecture, and the types of threats that need to be mitigated.
Project Part 3: Remote Access and VPNs
The third part of the project focuses on remote access and virtual private networks (VPNs). In today’s increasingly mobile workforce, employees often need to access corporate resources from remote locations. Remote access solutions enable secure access to the organization’s network and resources over the internet.
VPNs provide a secure and encrypted connection between remote devices and the organization’s network infrastructure. This ensures that sensitive data transmitted over the internet is protected from eavesdropping and interception. The project will explore different VPN technologies, such as IPSec, SSL/TLS VPNs, and remote access VPNs, and their suitability for the organization’s needs.
In conclusion, this project addresses various aspects of network security, including network design, firewall selection and placement, and remote access and VPNs. Each part of the project plays a crucial role in ensuring the security and integrity of an organization’s network infrastructure. By thoroughly considering these aspects, organizations can create a robust and secure network environment.
